I've been away from here for the past little while, having traded Sydney for a fast paced Hong Konger's life (thank god for university breaks) and shopping to my heart's content. Back now and I must introduce everyone to one of my favorite shops- Cher2, a discount nail polish retailer (did a google search a while ago and couldn't believe the lack of results that came back). The range is amazing and bargain hunting (OPI for less than 10AUD!) could just be my middle name, so what not to love?

Look at the website for the store list- it might involve navigating dark old elevators but the result is well worth it.

Valerie Soh, of www.valeriesoh.com, dressed so impeccably all through fashion week, was very friendly and as such a joy to photograph. I've been wondering who she was ever since RAFW- at that point in time I saw as a very stylish showgoer, with the right amount of bohemian fun and quirkiness thrown in (I mean, look at those stockings! They've got fringing running down the back!). So glad I now have a name to put to the face.

Karl Lagerfeld makes the most amazing short films. Made for the 2011/2012 cruise collection, the style of this film- with the use of B&W- for some reason makes me think of those silent films from ages past. Such a glorious idealized fantasy life with a wardrobe of Chanel.

I'm pretty sure my heart broke as I walked into Zara today. It is FILLED with people and it's 4.40pm on opening day. Zara is no longer the domain of chic overseas travellers. Although, the concession is that everything here is the goods are a mix of the overseas FW collection just past and the new summer collection, so at least I can get the Winter pieces on sale and wear them here.

This here is a video from Australian brand Lover to showcase their new collection- they found Amber Scott, from the Australian Ballet, to dance for them. Looking at a designer's labor of love walking on elaborate and unique runways really does add a whole new dimension to the experience. (Not that there's anything wrong with a classic runway, which I assume are created such that it's only about the designs. So that nothing detracts and distracts from fashion itself.)

Of the ones I've taken note of... Rodarte gets about 100 bonus points for creativity in putting those lights in the crates (is that what you would call it?) and constructing something that won't look out of place at an art installation. But then again, every Rodarte piece is a work of art so maybe that's the whole point! I approve of Jason Wu's catwalk just as much- it's a walkable shiny disco ball and its dark tones does wonders! (The Philosophy runway was just a bit crazy...)

There are simply some fabrics in the world where photos just won't do. BCBG used such light soft silks for SS11 that the dresses literally floated down the runway and all I could do was admire the movement. This is really minimalism speaking for itself. In my mind, I see a girl being late to a function... so she throws on one of these dresses, ties her hair up, and runs out the door looking effortless.

Vena Cava is telling me to go on holiday like you would not believe; Nicholas K- a TFSer described this collection as "Alexander Wang meets Vanessa Bruno meets Rag & Bone" and I totally agree as I see all the elements there (I suppose it's ok, if not very original, since I love all of the three mentioned designers!). Sachin + Babi is subtlety with edge... a caged siren; Jen Kao- A pirate lover, a desert romance.

I might have mentioned it a long time ago, but one of the greatest fashion charms about living in Australia is that technically... we can test the water by picking apart SS runway/beauty inspiration and having a go a good six months before our Northern Hemisphere counterparts! I've taken note of all my pre-show favorites and big name must sees, and am now excitedly wondering what is going to be added to my ever growing summer fashion priority list.

I blame it on 'Almost Famous' being on TV last week, and my love for fashiontoast blogger Rumi Neely, but I'm definitely feeling relaxed 70s festival goer/ hippie/ bohème, loose pirate shirts; crochet; fringing and tassles; denim; leather; headbands et al, and will mix that in with my regular classic/urban summer wardrobe. I need to work on a FW counterpart to this though, since I'm going traveling up to the Northern Hemisphere winter (gypset style?)!

Spring is slowly creeping up on Sydney, and the sunshine has made me dig through my wardrobe for my light blue denim cut offs again. Well... the weather, my weekend Gold Coast adventure and Conception Day. A big perk of going to Macquarie Uni is the annual Conception Day/ mini music festival/ a lets-go-crazy affair and there's always one big act (good to know uni is putting my tuition fees to good use!). This year Tame Impala is headlining!

I see irony everywhere, and none more than the fact that I announce I am going on hiatus only to find that I have blogged more in the past month than I have in the last year. It seems like with that one post, and with all the free time I have from my current university holiday, I'm rediscovering my interest in all things creative, all over again. Guess when I said sooner rather than late,r I really did mean much much sooner. So maybe I want to live in both the house and the loft after all.

Zara in Australia appears to be coming sooner rather than later! The article in The Australian seems to be quite convinced that Zara is coming in 2011! That's next year! And that H&M is looking into the Australian market. Oh yes, thank you. We're finally getting some of the goodies that our Northern Hemisphere have had for what seems like forever- I can't believe the difference in climate has been such a barrier to entry!

But we shall have to wait and see if something sudden delays them (I'm rather skeptical about time frames in general) and let's hope the prices will remain uniform, i.e. that Zara does not increase its prices to match the comparatively pricey Australian fashions. Along with the great styles that Zara can bring us, maybe the stronger competition can be a form of natural price regulation?

Just a quick one, big news that I'm super excited about! Australia might not have Zara, or H&M... but we finally have our very own Victoria's Secret! Just read in the newspaper today- first Australian store is in Sydney international airport Terminal 1 and is functional as of last week! Shame it's after customs though, because I'd be seeing someone off at the airport at the end of July and it would be good timing.

However, I did read elsewhere that it will be a travel and tourism shop, so more beauty and accessory product orientated. Baby steps though! We're working our way towards a full blown lingerie store here in Sydney city! I can imagine the masses, the crowds and the lines on opening day (when they get around to opening a store) already! Might even give the Apple crowds a run for its money?

It's been too long

The last time I posted was way back in July, and suffice it to say that a post has been long overdue. The Olympics has been and gone, the global economic environment is changing before our very eyes and meanwhile, I've been studying very very hard to boost my GPA. You see- I need something fantastic if I want to go on student exchange to Europe next year! This is just a short entry since I can't resist- I found an incredible blog I just have to share, to tell you all that I'm not dead and that I will start posting more regularly as soon as my exams finish (in a month's time!).

So... remember That-Girl-With-The-Camera I, along with the rest of the fashion blogosphere, was wondering about? You know- that fabulous chic one with the whimsically beautiful style? I totally forgot about her until I saw another one of her pictures on the Sart (left), which intrigued me all over again. And as a true child of the tech revolution- I started googling!

Rei Shito worked (past tense) for Japanese street style magazines STREET, FRUiTS and TUNE as a photog and PR and if you've ever wanted to see her work from behind the lense (as opposed to in front of the camera at The Sartorialist)- now's your chance! It's been a few months now but she's opened her own blog- STYLE from TOKYO. It showcases exactly that- the style from hip Tokyo! That, along with her photos from fashion week etc...

I think Tokyo is powerful and so exciting,and something new always happens! Everyone I saw on the street have their own individuality ,and also their own style.To see them,and talk together always makes me feel a positive energy! And I really love it. I will always be on street,and shoot them having their own style.

And I agree with her 100%! There is this great vibe and energy from Tokyo that is so strong it's almost tangible. It's full of surprises and so incredibly vibrant! China Vogue August 2008

Countdown has started: 20 days until the 2008 Beijing Olympics! The gymnastics, swimming, diving and some of the track events will draw me in, as usual, and I am so glad its held in China this time. None of that staying-up-all-night-to-watch-it business which is usually what happens. And so, in lieu of this grand sporting tradition, it seems only suiting that I post a dynamic editorial from China Vogue. Just look at the great sense of movement captured!

"Trendy Ceremony" as photographed by KT Auleta and styled by Brian Molloy. Featuring Qing Shupei, Karlie Kloss (read: the rising model star with the rather unique walk), Karmen Pedaru, Katya Shun and Hanne Gaby Odiele.

The second double spread reminds me of that Balenciaga ad campaign from a few seasons back- it's the graphic use of black and white I think, the girl on the left in the tartan photo- Karmen- has the most arresting expression and is a complete posing extraordinaire. Oh, and all that hosiery in the fourth picture is to die for!

Project Runway Season 5! It's started and my internet bandwidth is working overtime to download the first episode as I write this now. I am so excited about Project Runway ever since Christian Siriano. He might be arrogant, but you can't deny that he is so young, talented and incredible!
But as much as I love the show (what a great fashion reality show: I may be a hypocrite but I'm saying it's a whole lot better than Tyra's how-to-smile-with-your-eyes comments), I grow more and more concerned with Season 6 as I read that the Lifetime execs are relocating the show from NYC aka fashion capital to L.A. (aka celebrity central). Heidi is indifferent but Nina, faithful to fashion, says nay and is "saddened by the move"! What does the network say? The CEO believes this move will open a whole new avenue for the designers as "L.A. gives us Hollywood, red-carpet fashion, and more context for our challenges involving celebrity culture."

There's nothing wrong with L.A. per se- it's a glamorous city- but to move a fashion show out of the fashion capital does not seem entirely logical to me. So, my verdict? I say that while the world may grow a whole lot more interested in Project Runway because they're dressing more celebs, this gets point deductions from me and dare I say, the fashion world?

You either love it or you're not into it, but I- for one- love going to growers markets on Saturdays. It always feel so authentic, the food is incredible, lots or organic and gourmet goodies to both buy and eat! The idea of spending a sunny Saturday morning enjoying a cup of Toby's Estate coffee (quite frankly the best I've had in Sydney) whilst browsing through the stalls wins over the supermarket experience every time! There are two which I frequent:
1. The Good Living Growers Market: at Pyrmont Bay Park, on the lawn opposite the Star City casinos, first Saturday of every month. If you've never gone marketing before, I would definitely recommend this for your first time- one of the biggest of its kind in Sydney I believe. Opens 7am to 11am, but get there early-ish to buy the good stuff! Strolling by at 10am means half the stores are packing up since they've sold out already. Trust me, I know from experience...
2. Northside Produce Market: at North Sydney on Miller Street- between Ridge and McLaren Streets. From 8 to 12noon every third Saturday of the month. This one is similar to Pyrmont- you'll find that a lot of the stalls trade at both venues- just smaller in scale.
There's a new store on the scene that I want to make a special mention about since I happen to have a sweet tooth. Accordingly named Sweetness The Patisserie, I first saw them set up stall at the Northside produce market in mid May and their goods are heavenly! The marshmallows (in the picture the white ones are passionfruit and the purple are berry flavored!) are a dreamy fluffy concoution, and their shortbread is delicious. I also recommend the lime flavored marshmallows. Their retail store is at 10/53 Brisbane Road, Castle Hill and while I haven't been in there, I suggest you check out the shop if you're in the Hills area!

Russian Vogue July 2008

It's been an age since I've last done an editorial post but this one has got me so inspired I had to share! Natasha Poly ranks very very high among my list of favorites and to me, is one of the fiercest models around- the strongest walk I've seen, that strong face, a perfectly proportioned body and she exudes such great personality and sensuality that everyone just has to take notice.

The magazine issue I pulled this from is wholly dedicated to Natasha but I think this editorial is the best out of all of them. Titled "высокий старт" (anyone have a translation of that?). Miguel Reveriego as photographer, Simon Robins as stylist.

Don't you just love how every single piece of clothing is so luxe, with so much character, that they each tell a different story in themselves?

I'm dying for a pair of those crazy sunglasses now. A copy of Russian Vogue too! Who cares if I can't read a single word of it. Everyone knows pictures tell a thousand words.

The Next Aussie

Even though AusNTM (and GNTM) is what I would call the best of the "Next Top Model" franchise, it has largely become an undeniable fact that there is an inverse relationship between a girl's success on Top Model and her actual modeling career post show. Alice and Kasia are exempted from this as anomalies of course.
(Myf Shepherd- first 2 polaroids, Sarah Stephens- the other 2)
I say this because 17 year old Queenslander Myf Shepherd was an AusNTM reject- one of the many who didn't make it through the audition rounds of cycle 4 currently airing- but is now climbing the high fashion ladder rapidly. Domestically, she had a packed Australian Fashion Week show schedule. You might also recognize her from the 2009 Resort shows- the Prada and the Gucci.

She's got the unique name that half the female model population seem to have (considering that half probably come from Europe, it's really no surprise!)- her full name is actually Myfanwy Amy Shepherd according to news.com.au, she's got the gorgeous heavy fringed dark hair and great bone structure. I think she'll go far!

Although... I do like Sarah Stephens (yet another new stunning Aussie) a bit better though. Possibly because of this backstage photo? Sarah is with Chic Management as well and seems to have done a bit more work than Myf. I think it's Sarah's face- so refined and sophisticated, she looks darling in editorials- but they are both lovely.

He is truly fundamental and is part of the small influential elite who has made fashion what it is today- his legacy still reigns! A man persecuted. All in the name of Art.

So Sydney is currently ridden with an art controversy, and for you art lovers- you should all be in the know. Of course I'm talking about Bill Henson. Bill Henson is an Australian contemporary photographic artist and his latest exhibition at the Sydney Roslyn Oxley9 Gallery was canceled due to the nature of his subjects- his art depicted naked adolescents.This theme led to a complaint, police investigations and what-have-yous.

To truly understand everything, you would need to understand the foundations of Henson's work. His art is concerned with contrasts, juxtaposition and relationships. TheMaleBeauty noted the work (in it entirety) as a:

"meditation on the categories and relationships of male and female; youth and adulthood; day and night; light and dark; nature and civilization. Henson's intention is to use photography for creative expression. He states that he is not interested in a political or sociological agenda... (he) is not intending his photographs to be authoritative evidence but rather to suggest endless possibilities and cause people to wonder."

This is true of his canceled exhibition, which reflects the transition from childhood to adolescence. To me, the nudity is symbolic of who the child/teen really is- devoid of social class, background and all the other superficialities that society holds dear.
Henson who have been photographing "young nude junkies" and "teenage nudes" as far back as 1983 used to raise no eyebrows, there was no persecution- I mean, critics saw his work as "obvious", not scandalous! What's changed now?

Nudity in art and pornography simply should not be confused- one is for creative expression and the other is for sexual gratification. For the Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to label it as "revolting"- I am left speechless and disappointed. The comment by the artist Martin Sharp sums it all up rather well

"It was a powerful image. I would call it very beautiful in its vulnerability rather than 'revolting' as the Prime Minister has done," Sharp said. The photograph suggested the girl "gave her trust to Henson … and this trust has been violated by the police and Kevin Rudd's comments."

I will, however, acknowledge the current impasse. Should the government lay criminal charges on the man? Even lawyers have recognized the futility of such an act because "The Crimes Act requires two things - an intention and an act, the act is usually fairly easily established but if the intention is to produce a work of art and solely to produce a work of art, then I can not see how a crime has been committed" (read: Henson can easily find witnesses to prove his work as art). Henson's ex-models, even those who are now parents, had nothing against him- "His work is sublime and only a warped mind could associate it with such crassness" (not to mention he had full consent from all of them). The mother of the art-interested 13yo girl at the center of the controversy tells that they are "very strong supporters of Bill Henson and his works". But for the gov to let him go unscathed would most likely cause some certain strong reactions of the general public- not to mention Mr. Rudd. So what are they going to do?(This above photo is one of his older works)

So you've heard my (rather strong) stance on this topic. I think I've written enough. I want to hear your opinions!

Move aside Prada phone! What Dolce razr? Bye bye iphone! I want a Diorphone!
It looks phenomenal, comes out next month in selected Dior boutiques and I'll go so far to say its a 2-for-1 deal! You get the true sized phone and a mini phone! The mini is there so you don't have to rummage around the black crevasse of a huge leather bag that we are all so fond of (myself included)!
edit: just to clarify, the mini phone is a little thing for you to take calls (and answer calls only, I presume). My guess is that it'll probably be connected via bluetooth with your true phone.

There are, however, slight (or major) concerns- depending on how you look at it. One is the price- I'm reluctant to fork out 3500 euros for a phone. Another is that since this is Dior's first technological product, I have a feeling it will contain bugs, phone lag and its own set of problems. But the colors and the flip design instantly makes me associate it with trendy Japanese flip phones which are to die for! Looks aside, I guess I'll find out- in time- how efficient this Dior darling operates as reviews come out on various websites!

Watch and feel the mood and look of the Mads Nørgaard- Copenhagen collection. The Copenhagen Experience is his project that's going to run consectively through three of his collections- starting in SS08. His second short film came out in Feb and because Freja-Beha (as well as male model Eddie Klint and co.) is in it, there's no way I'm not blogging about this.

which I didn't like nearly as much as "The Copenhagen Experience #2" for Nørgaard's AW08 collection, aka the "Paint it Black" collection. His current work is:

about simplicity and elegance - confronted by decadence, trying to give decadence an updated meaning. Paris in the early sixties has been important, so has London - Mary Quant, Courreges and Cardin - Bob Dylan playing electric at London Olympia in 1966 - the optimism - confronted by a touch of spleen, weltschmertz. The tone is slightly thoughtful, and at the same time sexy, shiny and elegantly optimistic.

Maybe because it's smoother (as opposed to the choppy cutting technique used in #1, but that's a matter of personal opinion I suppose) or that the pieces are more noir and black. Is it the fact that there is a stronger story behind #2 or simply because Freja gets more air time?

A SunSilk Fashion Designer's Range

I got an email a week or so ago regarding this new limited edition range... and whilst I'm very selective about what I blog about, the products sure did intrigue me. It's a haircare x fashion collaboration between the brand SunSilk and three Australian designers who I would consider as being at the top of the Aussie fashion ladder- Collette Dinnigan, Alice McCall and Peter Morrissey.

In terms of quality, I'm haven't tried it so I have absolutely no idea, but the product contains crystal extracts for the "ultimate in shine". What I do know is that the bottles look fantastic and I'm a big sucker for appearances. You really can't expect anything else from someone who does judge books by their covers? I mean, it has to look good on the bookshelf (in this case, the bathroom)!According to the SunSilk site, these designers were chosen as each had their own design principles and each:

embodied one of the looks- funky, pretty and sexy. Alice McCall epitomizes youthful cool that is somewhat funky and edgy. Collette's clothes are delicate and beautiful and this is how women feel when they wear them. Peter on the other hand, his garmets are ozzing with alluring glamor. Peter's garments are made to make a woman feel beautiful, sensual and sexy.

I think I like the Morrissey bottle the best- it's glam in an almost glittery- Versace- gone- gothic sort of way (the ballet pink of Dinnigan is sweet too) and will stand out in my bathroom...

Hong Kong x Tokyo. A recap. Part II.

OK. Onto the Tokyo part of my trip. I stayed in Shinjuku, so I was in the Ginza/ Shinjuku/ Harajuku area quite a bit. And then, I went to the other shopping hot spot Shibuya as well. Akihabara for all my electronic/ techno needs (massive massive stores), sight seeing at Asakusa and a day trip to Yokohama. I won't bore you with the details, but it consisted of a whole lot of shopping, walking around and eating. You know- ramen and sushi and all that good authentic Japanese food. A special mention must be made for the Tsukiji fish market as the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world. A tourist area for sure, but the food was fantastic. Long lines for a sushi breakfast- impossibly fresh and the best sushi I've ever tasted.

On the fashion front, Harajuku had these grand flagships so I went snap happy:
The signature black and white Chanel look reflected in the color scheme of the store. I love the color blocking and it's style is classic with a twist- an embodiment of the Chanel design principles.
The Louis Vuitton store, in my mind, takes its inspiration from domestic architecture. The roof of the building looks like the modern house and whilst I don't think it's the most glamorous Louis flagship in the whole of Tokyo (the one at Roppongi beats this in terms of design hands down)... I sure won't mind living here.

This next one was snapped at Ginza. The Lanvin store. It's quirky and I like that. It stands out from your standard store fronts because of the black. I don't really know what else to write so I'll leave it at that (I think it's because I've been here quite a few times already). Preview: the next holiday recap post goes to my shopping loot!

So Next Top Model does produce winners!

I couldn't believe my ears- Tyra Banks' Top Model franchise really does produce top models! The AusNTM cycle 3 winner, Alice Burdeu, went on to rock the AW08 runways... and I don't mean just the smaller designers either- I'm talking Lanvin! Louis Vuitton! Alexander McQueen! Proenza! Ann Demeulemeester! All that good stuff for her first runway season. Ironic considering how Jodhi Meares (the AusNTM judge) reacted terribly unprofessional manner when Alice was made the winner (she was a big fan of the runner up) and how Australia was screaming about how terrible Alice is in the model weight debate.

But I'm sure you realize all that. What I find of utmost importance in her growing list of accomplishments is that she is going to be shooting her first major campaign for D&G Autumn Winter 2008 with Testino! I am definitely looking forward to it! From what I can see, it's only her and Ksenia of Russia's Next Top Model who have made it big. Ksenia gradually gained enough momentum after a few seasons to score a spot in the Gucci campaign line up alongside Lily D, Abbey Lee (an Aussie!), Kasia and Masha N!

If that's not good for NTM, I don't know what is. I just don't understand America's Next Top Model (aka the original Tyra led version). You'd think with Tyra's experience the presence of the girls would be stronger...

WHAT? CDG for H&M?

My mouth was opening like a goldfish, and I am completely and utterly speechless. Why, you ask? I just found out that Comme des Garçons is doing a "range of womenswear, menswear, childrenswear and accessories and create a new unisex fragrance" for H&M- according to British Vogue. What other response would you have possibly expected from me? It's launching in November, with an exclusive Tokyo launch a few days before the worldwide launch... and there is no way that I will not be spamming the H&M website/TFS since I am dying to know how it's going to turn out!

And what led Rei Kawakubo to say yes? It's as simple as this:

I have always been interested in the balance between creation and business. It is a dilemma, although for me creation has always been the first priority. It is a fascinating challenge to work with H&M since it is a chance to take the dilemma to its extreme, and try to solve it.

which, in turn, reminds me of Andy Warhol's famous quote:

Never have I been this excited about a designer x mass retailer collaboration! You can feel it radiating off my words, can't you? If H&M was available in Australia, you can bet on it that I'd be lining up outside (as sad as that sounds, it's true...)

Hong Kong x Tokyo. A recap. Part I.

So, let's see. Where to start... (I've got so much to say!) I traveled over to Hong Kong for approximately one month/ month and a half, from the start of February to early/mid March... as well as going to Tokyo from the 21st to the 26th. It was cold- around 9°C when I arrived in HK. I know that's probably nothing to most of you considering that it probably snows in winter wherever you are, but for someone like me (who was traveling super light) it's bad. Especially since HKers walk everywhere and there's no adequate heating system in place in the shopping centers.
The shopping was, of course, heavenly. I bought so much- lots of jeans, shorts, shoes, makeup (I went CRAZY!), scarves, coats, a few electronic items... you name it, I probably got it! If you ask me to name some shopping hot spots in HK, I'll definitely have to say:
Causeway Bay- it's a smörgåsbord of the high and low. You'll find the Lane Crawfords and Louis Vuittons alongside local fashion boutiques in the shopping arcades. This is definitely my personal favorite, along with...
Mongkok- which is completely packed neighborhood and has lots more little arcades. I recommend the Argyle Center- a 4 level something with lots lots of stores selling a variety of goods from jewelry to fashion, hosiery and shoes at affordable prices(The con is that you cannot try on any items of clothing). The shopping center Langham Place is also worth going to- take the long escalator up to the very top and you can wander back down through the little lanes and "cobblestone" paths.
Admiralty /Central / Tsim Sa Tsui- all the brand names you could ever ask for (along with the staples). These districts have a stronger Western influence and it really shows in the culture of the area. Lang kwai Fong / Soho area at Central is a definite mention for bar-hopping

One of the places I was looking forward to going was Elements, HK's newest shopping mall, which opened in October last year. Developed by the MTR corporation, it's situated right above the Kowloon MTR station. The concept of the mall revolves around the five elements of nature- metal, wood, water, fire and earth . Take a look at the interiors here.

Elements houses all your favorite luxury brands. Prada, Lanvin, Cartier, Valentino, Fendi, Gucci, Vivienne Westwood, Jill Stuart and Versace just to name a few. Here- I took a few photos of the Lanvin store display- the warped design of the balcony railings on its second storey (it's a 2 level store).
Doesn't everyone wish they live in a fantasy like this? I sure do... I've been staring at the picture for the last few weeks and I'm still not over the beauty of it. It's clean vintage and just major!

Just saying hello- I'm back!

So I've been back for a little while now, but the fact is- uni lectures, assignments, tests, work and trying to unpack my luggage all at the same time has me a little behind in my posting! So, before I rush off to go to uni (I'm super late!) I just want to wave my hand and say hi! I had a fantastic time overseas- such a good time that I definitely didn't want to come back to Sydney! Now, despite all the benefits of living in Australia, I am even more certain that I want to move out of the Southern Hemisphere- I definitely feel more at home in a crowded city.

What did I do, you ask? Highlights include: shopping too much and going to the Chanel and Zaha Hadid Mobile Art Museum. Amazing exhibits and all based around the 2.55. How could any girl not love it? The Mobile Art Exhibition deserves a whole another post in itself and by God, I have so much to say about it.

Ok, so now I really really really got to go. Or I'll miss my bus.

Gone for a month.

I'll try to update if I can get my hands on a computer, but otherwise... I will be taking a one month hiatus from now until early March. This time tomorrow, I'll be arriving into Hong Kong- which is where I'll be spending most of my time (with a mini trip to Tokyo thrown in for good measure).
I'm going to take lots and lots of pictures of just about anything and everything, from lovely store displays to elegant architecture to my own purchases, to show you girls.

I much prefer to call it the hooded scarf because it just sounds nicer, but if you've never heard of it... a scoodie is a combination of the scarf and hoodie. I've never even seen anyone rock this until Renee of ANTM Cycle 8, who wore one by Kasil, but by the looks of it- this trend just might be picking up momentum, with brands from Urban Outfitters (L) to Mike & Chris (R) selling them.

The UO one reminds me of the winter D&G collection a while back- you know, the one with the fur boots, thick white knits, white short shorts, snow and the works?

While both those designs have its own merits... I, however, happen to like this one better. By the Korean brand Bone, it seems to be completely sold out in the usual online shopping websites- I found this in the beauty and fashion section of soompi forum, a korean/asian site I sometimes visit for street style ideas. It's very versatile and looks a whole lot warmer than the M&C one (cheaper too!). Much more minimalist and stylish that the UO pompoms in my opinion... even if they make me think of D&G!

What with the writer's strike going on, and Gossip Girl on a hiatus because of it (Hollywood, please please please compromise already), I'm so thankful towards the new ABC show Cashmere Mafia. The description of it as a "thinking woman's Sex and The City mixed with the wit of The Devil Wears Prada" is totally spot on- especially since it's styled by the famed Patricia Field of SATC. The series revolve around the lives of four high flying career minded women in Manhattan who met at business school.
I'd like to introduce you to the "Cashmere Mafia", who are (from L to R): Caitlin Dowd, Mia Mason, Juliet Draper and Zoe Burden. Caitlin (Bonnie Summerville) is the Senior VP for marketing of Lily Parish Cosmetics and quite unsure about her sexual orientation. Mia (Lucy Liu) is the Publisher of the Barnstead Media with a fabulous corner office and sometimes wear the most stunningly outrageous pieces. Juliet (Miranda Otto) is the COO of Stanton Hall Hotels and Resorts and Zoe (Frances O'Connor) is a working mom and the Managing Director of Gorham Sutter's M&A division.
Throw in ex-fiances, cheating husbands and work crises and you have this hilarious and fun show to watch! For those Australians who are not fans of internet TV, Cashmere Mafia is coming to Channel Nine in February 2008.

On a tangent. Model Inspiration.

There's only one excuse for my lack of updating, and that is my inconsistent frame of mind- my flights of fancy I suppose. What with changing courses, changing universities, general upheaval and all that. Its high time I posted here.

Some designers find that a true model makes a fantastic muse because of their chameleon-like qualities and fierce sense of style- I absolutely agree with that! So here are my picks from SS08 FW. And yes, I know it was so long ago... but I was looking for inspiration in what to buy when I head overseas (my GOD, I can hardly wait! 2 more weeks!).
Two models, among a select few others, who give me major style inspirations are Lily D. and Irina.
Lily's is always effortlessly chic and her tastes are actually very similar to mine. Irina does this rocking menswear influenced style which fascinates me endlessly- since men's clothing sometimes interests me more than womenswear! I'm pretty sure it's because of the clean lines and the tailored silhouette, as I generally prefer detailed, understated and classic with a twist to the more embellished, sometimes fussy look of skirts and dresses. It's sad, but I'm still at a stage where I mostly avoid floral and feminine prints with a vengance... so I guess no de la Renta or DvF for me!

Boxing Day Sales 2007...

... was quite a success for me, because I got this incredible pair of Ted Baker heels for this great low price. I mean, it's almost impossible to say no when they were about 55% off and felt so comfortable! Not to mention the elegant shape of the heel!
I think it was the cute row of buttons at the back that did it, because I'm normally not a fan of shoes with the pointed toe. And the green suede should look grand with perfectly opaque dark tights and something short, don't you think?

Gossip Girl: Blair's tuxedo shift

So I finally succumb to the pressure of blogging about Gossip Girl style, mainly because I found myself to be absolutely in love with this one particular outfit of Blair's. In episode 12 (the latest one), Blair was seen in the most fantastic tuxedo bib dress in the second half of the show... paired with the white tights and stack heels that B seems to be partial to.
After a bit of digging, I've found that the dress is by Catherine Holstein and was available at satineboutique.com but is now sold out. A shame, because I would have bought it in a second. The style is great, that masculine/feminine thing which can look so chic and the white button sleeves are adorable! Oh, and while I'm at it... there's something about the far reaching influence of GG fashion that I just have to mention.

I have a friend who recently bought a $300 corset, from Pleasure State if I recall correctly, at the Boxing Day sales after seeing B in it. It was the second episode, where she was trying on dresses for the brunch.I have to say the frilly underwear is beyond!

Make-A-Wish come true.

It's been out for a while now, since November 20 to be exact, but I've only just noticed these limited edition Myer tees which are super-cute and support the Australian charity Make-A-Wish as well! There are a range of designs from names such as Jennifer Hawkins and Wayne Cooper to my favorite print by Jayson Brunsdon.

They retail at $29.95 each- and $10 of every tee is donated to Make-A-Wish. Brunsdon's grand fashion illustration wins hands down, but Leona Edmiston's is also very sweet in a simplistic innocent kind of way. The words might be a bit hard to read but it's "Wishing upon a star" all jumbled up together (I think...). Apologies for the bad pictures, the lighting in the dressing room was quite low!

... it's just that I've been super busy! You know, what with:

extended trading hours at work because of Christmas- just a fyi for you Aussie babes: David Jones is open until 10pm this Monday to Wednesday, and til midnight on Thursday and Friday if you want to fit in some late night shopping,
Christmas shopping for family (I still have no idea what to get my Dad...),
sorting out my timetable for university next year- I'll hopefully be taking a fashion course next semester!
doing some research for places to go and shop in Hong Kong and Tokyo. I'll be in HK for about a month, with a little side trip to Tokyo thrown in there, starting early Feb. My grand shopping plan is to check out the warehouses in HK but anyone got suggestions for Japan? I'm particularly interested in designer outlets- Yohji, CDG, Tsumori Chisato, Junya and all those good Japanese designers!
compiling a mile long shopping list for said trips overseas,
and making another (not as long) shopping list for the boxing day sales. That's an equivalent of the Blk Friday sales in the US of A!

But enough excuses now, I've got the cutest little pair of shoes to show you!! They're Tony Bianco- red patent leather cone heels: the style is called "Ravel" and they're only around $100 mark. The design might not be new, but I just love that these are close toe (I'm feeling the oversaturation of peep toes!) and the cone heel won me over (just look at the runway).

Shame that these size 6s are too big for me!

Just a quick question for my fellow bloggers out there regarding image placement- it's irritating me no end! For those who use IE to view my blog, you would probably have recognized my problem already: the strange gaps and formatting appearing in my posts between images every now and then because I myself use Firefox.

Take my latest post for example:
I guess my question is: What can I do to, in a sense, standardize the look of my posts between different browsers?
(I'm not even sure whether my call for help makes sense or whether it's just a jumble of words... but if you have just an inkling of what I'm on about, and know a possible solution, I would greatly appreciate any form of contribution!!)

Tattoos are endlessly fascinating and so intriguing, don't you think? The artfully done and meaningful ones especially! I don't know why but I confess that I hold a growing appeal toward tatts and am even considering getting one (But first, I've got to mull the idea over for at least a year or two...)!

And since I've brought up this subject, it's impossible for me not to mention Freja Beha, my newest model crush! A rocking dark haired long legged beauty with rocking tattoos who completely steamed up the SS08 catwalks in my books. Her list of markings are growing (she's actually just got some recent additions) and she's really looking magnificent with her new short hair!

Finally! The prediction is correct- it's coming out Wednesday! And you know what? The content looks great- what with SS08 trend reports (kudos to the team for covering the right season! Vogue and Kirstie Clements, you know I'm glaring at you right now!), an Anja piece and a Julia Restoin Roitfeld interview!
Too bad I'm going to have to wait until Thursday to buy... it would become such a big procrastination tool (My finals end on the Thursday, and then its summer holidays!) because I know I just won't be able to control myself.

My favorite Aussie bi-monthly read Russh has just launched it's premier Japanese issue, with Aggy Deyn on the cover, as the first Australian fashion title to break into the international market according to The Australian! Despite already receiving several offers from various publishing houses for syndication, the team has taken their time in find the one. And on top of that, it's taken them a year of negotiations with Japan's Selek before settling. So you can be sure that this Russh sister "embodies the spirit of Russh" and is totally "spot-on".
Oh, a heads up from their myspace: it seems like Russh Japan is going to becoming a monthly affair from March 2008 onwards! What do you think- is the Australian one going to go monthly too?

With a vision that you "don't have to read either a mainstream of an avant-garde magazine" but that "you can do both in the same publication" and distribution in over 20 countries, Russh really is getting bigger and better- why, they just recruited Trevor Stones of AUS Vogue onto the team! Watch out for this mag- this little piece of genius is going to go far! Better yet, go to the newstands on the 7th (I think) and you should find Anja Rubik staring at you from the new Russh cover!

You have no idea just how excited I am! The funny thing is, I can't even read Japanese! And if any of you think that someone from the mag put me up to this as a promotional strategy, well... I'll have to tell you otherwise. I'm incredibly stoked that this beauty is breaking boundaries because it's about time Australia Vogue is presented with a challenge so they might realize how unoriginal and uninspiring they [the Vogue team] are! First off, thankyou for the well wishes! I hope I do alright and don't turn into those stark, raving mad and totally incompetent SAs we've all come across in our lifetimes! You know- the ones who look you up and down when you walk to their department, weighing your wealth in their mind's eye. I have had too many terrible shopping experiences to name...And on a happier note, here are more details on the job for those who asked. I've gotten a little more info now that I've been to the pre-employment session:
- I get a 10% discount off all goods (bar the furniture, electronics and all that jazz, which is 5%) but if I purchase anything that is part of the dress code- meaning I can wear it as part of the uniform- then it's 30% off! Dress code means all black, which is what I tend to wear anyway
- The pay is alright I guess. Slightly above the average McDonalds/Starbucks wage, and time and a half on Sundays. I hope I get lots of Sundays, because there's nothing bad to be said for making more and spending more.
- I've got orientation coming up, and will be starting work after 15/11 (my last day of uni exams).

I think that about covers everything...

So it seemed like I bluffed my way through the interview: I got the job! A two to three month gig in Ladies shoes at a nice department store seems like a pretty decent way to spend the holidays- Can't you just see me befriending all those shoes? I mean- "Hello Manolo!" "Hey where did Louboutin go?" I think I've died and gone to shoe heaven. Kind of reminds me of this quote I once saw on a shopping bag:

Heaven is closer when you are in high heels.

I think I could probably find something delicious to toast to that!

I finally got around to installing Photoshop on my newly formated computer and so, it's only right that I make a header for this blog. I mean- it's about time the layout stopped looking so boring and plain! The bird is featured in a Comme des Garçons advertisement that I first found in the pages of the September i-D. I was so mesmerized by it that there was nothing I could do but use it!

Edit: It seemed like some problems occurred with the header, which I hopefully just fixed.So I need to ask: does it work on your computer now? As in- can you see it?

You know how I mentioned another two Designers for Target collections? Finally got around to heading to the store- sure, I went a few days after it arrived... but the hype over fashion collaborations in Australia, after the Stella craze, is really not that big. The styles and range is an improvement from the Josh Goot and the quality considerably better than expected- keeping in mind that my expectations were minimal. I snapped a few pics on the camera phone, a sad little 1.3 megapixel thing that thankfully didn't make any strange noises whenever I took a photo (unlike my old Sony Ericsson), and here they are- apologies for the dismal resolution.

This is the dress you wanted to know more about, Lady! I think the clever lighting of the ad made it out to be more glamorous that it really is- it almost seems a little plain in real life now (the model looked très chic in it, non?). But then again... I didn't try it on because I just had a feeling that it would slightly strange on me. I would be wary of the fabric though, because whilst an acceptable quality... it looks like just the thing which will snare horribly if your nails aren't smooth and buffed and perfectly neat.

The cute sequined bags that I mentioned. Didn't actually take a good look at them because I knew I wouldn't be buying it, but since they looked so shiny and well... shiny, I just had to take a photo. It a good way to keep up to date with the whole metallics trend that's lingering around. To me, the black has a whole lot more class that the white- the black makes me think of those darling trumpeters, pianists and sax players in smoky clubs- playing sexy, husky jazz/blues tunes which I adore!

Those black shorts are major! I'm not sure how I'd pull it off (maybe with sheer knee socks or thigh high socks? Or maybe not... the fabrics would clash terribly I imagine- ) but just look at the draping and the pleats and details at the waistband! They're too good to pass up! Maybe I'll buy them when they go on sale (once again, I'm pulling the its-not-good-enough-quality excuse).Oh, and regarding the last photo-

I was extremely against the purple/ beige eyelet shift when I first found it online, but seeing it in store is a whole different story! The material is fantastic compared to most of the other cheaper looking ones- it looks very stiff, holds its shape well and is everything I think a nice shift should feel like. If you were planning to buy just one thing from these 2 collections, I would have to say the shift. Nothing else adds up quite as well.

Unless of course, you preferred the swimwear- all those frilly one pieces and bikinis in red or black! I'm not sure how I'd respond to you if I saw you on the beach with it though...

A number of very strange and rather shocking conversations between myself and an 8yo girl, the daughter of a family friend- let's call her Anni, occurred when they were visiting last week and I was absolutely stunned:
Topic 1: Fluoro pink is the thing to be seen in, said she.
"You know, you really should buy some fluoro pink. It's very popular these days." kicked off the first conversation. I think I was staring at Anni, mouth open half the time. Wait, what? Come again? I'm not trying to be elitist but it was shocking to realize how different 8yo girls a decade ago (aka moi) were from the kids of today. I think I was watching Sailor Moon and playing with yoyos in my tomboy jeans-and-Tshirt outfits.

Topic 2: She recommends Payless as the place to source your black flats.
Because Anni just got her first pair of blk ballet flats at Payless, she recommend I get mine there too (sorry hun, I thought, I've already got a few pairs too many...)

Topic 3: It's all about layering, dahling!
"I really like these- points at her plain long sleeved blk Tshirt - it's really good for layering. Because we're in Spring so it's still a bit cold. An outfit kind of like what I'm wearing now..." For your information, she wore a blue and white patterned mid thigh baby doll over the Tshirt, with blk leggings and those flats. By God, she's trendy for someone who's not even a tween yet! [The photo was the first example that came to mind, a tad bit old- Marc by Marc Jacobs SS06 RTW]

Topic 4: What do you call them? Pencil jeans or skinny jeans?
Anni really really really wants a pair. Enough said. Apparently, I'm somewhat "uncool" because I don't own a pair. Does that mean I'm a nerd? Does it?

I sound terribly bitchy, don't I? I don't mean to, but I guess I still haven't gotten over our "enlightening" conversations yet. I say enlightening, in quotation marks no less, because it reflects the strength and power of advertising on the child and the tween in my opinion. Ever since a few years ago, it's suddenly become all about the tween- they're a huge market because they're aware of what's hot (and what's not), they understand the importance of one's appearance... but don't have a job yet. So to me, what the tween does is spend extravagantly on luxury goods with their parents' no limit credit cards. I'm not against the concept of either spending lots on luxury goods or the use of my mom's credit card per se (God knows I do it a lot)... it's just that if they're spending so much at a stage when they're not truly aware of the value of money, how much debt and card bills are they going to run up as an adult? And are they really aware of what's good quality, what's worth the price... and what's not? Is this in fact going to be the catalyst that will eventually lead to a First World debt crisis? [Shhh- I know I know. I'm being melodramatic...]
Since everything is growing so much more accessible, and as children's fashion is becoming more like adult's fashion just shrunken in size, kids seem to be growing up so fast- at a glance, they appear to look better, act wiser- in an almost adult like manner- and it's such a foreign idea to me. Sure I was a city girl (no doubt I always will be) but I remember my childhood fondly- days spent in the local park playground, playing with the neighbor's kids and trying to beat the boys at handball during school recess and lunch. Anni seems to spend her days applying nail polish, reading numerous fashion magazines (she namedropped Harper's and Vogue at various points in time) and listening to Avril Lavigne and Gwen Stefani.

I don't know what to think.Are they being deprived of a childhood because of the commercialization, and materialization, of everything? Or are we simply redefining what childhood means?

I personally might not like Kate Moss' new bangs (too blonde, too Irina. I definitely preferred her old messy/sexy bedhead look with that dirty blonde coloring rather than this wild platinum blonde bob) because it makes her look like a burnt out, too tired party girl, but that does not detract at all from the quality and sexy quality of this phenomenal ed. For lack of better words, just look at how bloody HOT she looks in Too Fast to Live. What a perfect title for this perfect ed- it's like the noughties' take on sex, drugs and rock-N-roll. Just pure complete dark glamor.

Just a side note because this is just amazing. Boring old unemployed me, with absolutely no proper retail experience, have been called in for a group interview at David Jones (one of the two dept stores which dominate Australia. Personally, I see DJs as more of an upper class thing than Myer) this Thursday. A miracle I tell you. A pure miracle. That and my friend's genius CV which I used as a template for my own.

I'm hoping against hope that I'll get the casual SA position that I want- I want that discount!Oh... and it's Christmas, my summer holiday, so I can practically work FT! Here's to more money, because 1. one can never be too rich or too thin and hence 2. I am an absolute casholic:

Here's to another Target collection

So I just got a Target email telling me to check out their Designers for Target website because of the new collections. That's right- it's meant to be plural since there are two lines: Gail Sorronda and Yeojin Bae. I'm afraid I've never heard of Sorronda before, and since the website only has a small part of that collection up, it's kind of hard to judge. I did, however, spot a black sequined bag (there's also one in white) that's $69.99 and quite tremendous. And also a pleated mini, available once again in blk or white- also for $69.99. Too bad it's denim though, because the volume of it makes me think of those infamous SS07 Prada shorts for some reason. I'm not quite sure why...

Yeojin Bae is all about femininity and cute summer pieces. I know pictures may be deceiving but the quality just appears to be so much better! Am quite interested in the belts- it's very cute, very wearable and has that utilitarian/vintage look about it. The other three outfits that I posted here show the variety of the line- you have the LBD, the darling white summer day dress and the luxe tones of that last one is perfect for a night out on the town! Another instance where it reminds me of the SS07 Prada RTW- this time, I'm quite sure it's the color and the silk.

Collection comes out October 13. I suppose I will feel compelled to wander into Target and take a look. Even though the likelihood of me buying is very slim. A maybe on the belt, I guess.

I was in the gym the other day and it's funny how many people are joining up now. Prepping for the 07/08 Summer, anyone? I've been going through the net looking for some chic activewear inspiration- incredibly vain of me but I'm running out of options. My gym wear consists of 3 pairs of sneakers, 2 pair of pants and about 5 T-shirts (which are almost identical too!). Seriously minimalistic I tell you. I have a feeling some of the class instructors are probably thinking "My God! Does this girl have nothing else to wear?" Oh! And the fact that I'm thinking of joining some dance classes prompted this too. I'm leaning more towards the contemporary/ jazz thing, because I used to take jazz classes back in high school.
Nicole Richie is my top pick for sportswear inspiration, as you can probably tell. I'm not too fond of some of her Free City pants: you know- the baggy ones which are elasticated around the ankles. But some of her other choices are ingenious. It's very casual and well, quite average, such that I won't mind being seen in it as I do a supermarket run before heading home (I'm one of those who have a phobia to being seen in sweatpants unless it's in the name of fitness). I threw in some leotards because that's what I think when I hear the word dancewear. That... and pointe shoes!

I save all the ones I love onto the computer, under an extremely complicated filing system (that only I seem to understand), and try to narrow them down to blog about. It's too hard, too difficult and altogether too time consuming (especially since I love it all). Not to mention it'll be even more chaotic when Milan and Paris rolls around- so! I'm gonna sort it out after fashion week is over! And consequently, blog about it then.

Just you wait. I promise promise promise I will actually post it up! Be on the lookout from around October 8 I suppose. In the mean time, it's back to regular posts!

Don't you just find the variety within the ed fascinating? From pianos to giraffes to graffiti. I won't quite say it's the crème de la crème and one of my all time number ones, but it's the most intriguing one in October from the scans I've seen. Beats W's scary Kate Moss ed (although there seem to be a certain je ne sais quoi there...)

Bonjour, new wardrobe! Hello new clothes! The lighter months of the year has finally arrived down here, much to my dismay (because now I've got to up my gym-going routine and I don't do sweaty!), but FASHION WEEK SS08 IS FINALLY UPON US! You know, as that facebook group goes- the only holiday I celebrate is FW!
Oh how I envy you smashingly dressed New Yorkers who get to wander through the glamorous mayhem that defines NYFW! Any of you invited to the shows? Or planning to crash anyway? There's not much to write about trends at the moment (style.com is comparatively slow in uploading pictures but the lack of watermarks make it worthwhile) since it's only start a few days ago and since the Paris and Milano shows has more influence, but so far I see that high waisted shorts are still staying strong. Nothing as short as those Prada ones though!

I'll upload some photos when I sort through them properly (and when I take a break from spamming style.com). But whoever is going, you've got to tell me all about it: let me live vicariously through you!

I'm not sure what everyone else thinks of chic-lit, but I personally adore it! I've been re-reading them as an act of procrastination and they are so much fun, there's always a happy ending (well... at least all the ones I can think of) and most of the characters wear fabulous clothes! I do so enjoy the detailed clothing descriptions although the name dropping can get a bit much for some. Plum Sykes (the photo is of her way back in her Vogue days) is a serial offender in my eyes- her books were even called fashion porn by The Independent.

Here are my favorite outfits from the Bergdorf Blondes and The Debutante Divorcée respectively. Just for fun. Because I can.

Decked out beyond belief at all times in very, very petite skirts, tiny vintage couture coats, and sunglasses like a millenial Twiggy. She must have studied fashion in Paris... (Bergdorf Blondes)

Casually dressed she exuded a natural glamor that was low on bling and high on class. Her daytime uniform consisted of long, skinny pants fom Marni, little lace blouses by YSL, and miniscule, shrunken leather jackets from Rick Owens. (Debutante Divorcée)

TV has been quite dull lately... so I've taken to watching it online! It's the fact that Australian shows are terrible (yes! I said it! I have no loyalty to Australian media at all!), the free to air channels don't buy anything interesting or that some of the shows they buy are so old (how is it possible that they are showing ANTM5 at the moment?). I think I know what's going to be added to my growing list of online shows:
Yes: Gossip girl. I happen to love frivolous shows and since this is from the producers of The OC, it should be light and fun, don't you think? Based on the book series of the same name, by Cecily von Ziegesar, it's about the going ons of teenage socialites from NYC's Upper East Side. It's set to air in the US of A on September 19 (aka soon!) right after ANTM9.

If it's up to scratch, I guess I'll look out for torrents of each episode. Hopefully, it will be as good and OC-like as the teaser looks... and that all their wardrobes will be similarly as fabulous!

Va va voom...

This girl was on stage singing with her band a combination of cool jazz and pop at the Sydney Aroma Festival 2007. Normally I would've just walked by, but her outfit is brilliant!
It's actually quite a simple style, but this is MAJOR (I use major because seriously, who doesn't want to talk like Posh?)! It's either the wind swept blonde hair, the silver aviators or the jacket/short skirt thing going on. I want to pluck her out of the noughties and place her back in the 70s. She's got that glamorous jet-setting/ air-hostess look about her. A 70s martini commercial would kind of work too. Kind of hard to explain... but bottom line is- she looks chic!

And just to clarify... the Aroma Festival is this annual event out at The Rocks with coffee, chocolate and tea stalls, and The Rocks is this place by the Harbor for those who don't know. It has a view of the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Opera House, along with the Museum of Contemporary Art, hence making it a tourist hot spot. The Spanish scene from Mission Impossible II was actually filmed there!!
